Getting to Trier

Trier sits in the far west of Germany, on the Mosel (Moselle) river and close to the Luxembourg border. Most visitors coming from the US fly into Frankfurt and drive the rest of the way, roughly two hours by car. The old town itself is compact and walkable: Porta Nigra (the Black Gate), the Hauptmarkt (the main market square), the Cathedral of St. Peter and the Roman baths all sit within a few hundred meters of one another, so nearly any hotel in the center leaves the UNESCO sites within walking distance.

Which part of Trier to book

The Innenstadt (city center) is the default choice: pedestrian streets, restaurants and four UNESCO sites on foot. Olewig, a wine village that belongs to Trier, makes sense when wine is the point of the trip, and it is where the Olewiger Weinfest is held. Along the Mosel promenade you trade a few extra minutes of walking for river views and quieter nights. Hotels on the southern edge of the old town are typically about a ten-minute walk from the Hauptmarkt.
